On 4th September 2010 at 4.35am, Canterbury was woken by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake. Many of our historic buildings in the Christchurch City were destroyed or severely damaged but Hornby seems to have escaped without much damage. Some chimneys fell and the odd fence fell over. Ornaments etc were broken when they suddenly landed on the floor. Much of Hornby was without electricity for over 24 hours but were better off than other suburbs because at least they still had sewerage, water and telephone.
