Denton Park was kindly gifted by the late Stanley Denton as a Recreation Reserve for future benefit and well being of residents in 1952
Denton Park is a park used for recreation and a number of sports in Hornby as their base including Hornby United Football Club, Hornby Rugby Football Club, Hornby Rugby Football, Hornby Cricket and mas Oyama Kyokushin Karate (who are based in the former Hornby Scouts building).
Most famous for hosting the Cycling for the Commonwealth Games in 1974, the velodrome is still used by Canterbury Track Cycling and hosts an annual carnival early every January. With the Oval being the home ground for the Hornby Rugby Football Club
In 2017 the Christchurch City Council proposed the new site of the South West Leisure Centre to be built on Denton Park, but this was met with residents resistance and a Save Denton Park was group was formed that ultimately saved the facility being build on Denton Park and to be build on Kyle Park.
Denton Park is a 7 hectare sporting field with a small playground, located off the Main South Road, Hornby. It is also home to a high-pressure water pumping station and reservoir and the recently refurbished Path Ways Sculpture thanks to the local schools and Christchurch City Council.
